The Managing Director of the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE), Mr. Nikos Avlonas, recently met with Mr. Herman Von Rompuy, the First President of the European Council, at the Inaugural Ceremony of the Presidency in Brussels. This challenging 2-day course enables participants to acquire the skills and competencies required to become qualified CSR practitioners, certified by IEMA. Through specialised, detailed and highly focused training, it provides them with the tools and necessary practical framework of every CSR aspect. Upon completion of the course, trainees are able to apply their knowledge in all levels of CSR from the development and implementation of effective CSR strategies, to CSR reporting and communication.

Key modules to be covered include:

  • Future trends & Legislation for CSR worldwide

Chemical Group to Forgo Use of DAE Oils in Synthetic Rubber Production

Specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG is to globally forgo the use of DAE oils in the production of synthetic rubbers from December 1, 2009 onwards. To safeguard the supply of alternative products, LANXESS’s Performance Butadiene Rubbers (PBR) business unit will enter into a strategic co-operation with Swedish oil producer Nynas. Read more

Moving Forward with Bio-Fuel

Specialty chemicals group LANXESS AG has developed a series of HNBR rubbers with extremely high acrylonitrile (ACN) content, thus making them suitable for use in vehicles that are run on biofuels.

Many drivers believe that biodiesel and bioethanol offer potential for averting the climate crisis. However, this “fuel from the field” poses considerable challenges for the materials currently used in automotive engineering. The new synthetic rubbers Therban AT 5065 VP, Therban AT 5005 VP and Therban 5008 VP are better equipped against swelling in “green fuel” thanks to their high acrylonitrile content of up to 50.5 percent (upper specification limit). LANXESS – a pioneer in synthetic rubber – has made considerable progress with this product development in terms of the sensitivity of the rubber components. Read more

New Carbon Footprint Strategy for Businesses

Gefyra Leitourgia operates the Rion Antirion Bridge, which crosses the Corinth Gulf in Greece. With the assistance of the Centre for Sustainability and Excellence (CSE), Gefyra has developed a Carbon Footprint Strategy in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions produced from its annual operations, based on the Greenhouse Gas protocol (GHG), which will also result in reducing the organisation’s operating costs.

This initiative further aims at steadily reducing the amount of produced greenhouse gas emissions on an annual basis, as well as gaining the official Climate Neutral certification, via the implementation of carbon offsetting from the credible Swiss organisation, “myclimate”. This action is considered a step forward, after last year’s successful implementation of a public awareness campaign, which was realised in lieu of the World Environmental Day, during which the concepts of eco-driving and carbon offsetting were promoted to bridge users.
