MENGO Green Hunt 2011
The Malaysian Environmental Non-Governmental Organisations (MENGO) – a network of 17 civil society organisations working on sustainable development and environmental conservation formed in 2001 – will be celebrating their tenth anniversary with an exhibition and the MENGO Green Hunt.
The hunt was officially launched close to two big dates in the green calendar: World Biodiversity Day on 22 May and World Environment Day on 5 June, and MENGO member President/ Founder of EcoKnights, Ms. Yasmin Rasyid, presented a talk on “BioDiversity: the Bigger Picture” at today’s media launch of the MENGO Green Hunt.
MENGO is organising the “walk and hunt” event focusing on green living concepts on Saturday, 25 June 2011 at the Weld Shopping Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Members of the public who would like to participate in the MENGO Green Hunt can register at www.mengo.org
MENGO Green Hunt 2011 will focus on sustainable transport and promote a low ecological footprint as the event will have a near zero waste production. All materials that will be used for the event will be recycled materials, consumables with eco/biodegradable packaging, with reduction in usage of plastics and other non-degradable substances in order to minimise waste production. The hunt will comprise categories that utilise public transport by foot, bus and rail, thereby having a low impact on the environment. Questions will revolve around a central theme of sustainable living and green practices.
The registration fee is RM200 for each three person team. Prizes include the first prize of RM3,000 in cash with RM2,000 for second prize and RM1,000 for the third prize. There will be prizes for the top ten teams and 10 consolation prizes. Registration closes on 10 June 2011 or when the target of 200 participating teams is met.
The MENGO Green Hunt, now in its third year, will follow an exhibition on the 25 of June showcasing the conservation efforts of the 17 members and celebrating the MENGO coalition’s tenth anniversary. MENGO creates an avenue for regular dialogues between the government and civil society to address common issues on the environment and it provides a mechanism where local groups and communities can voice their concerns which will be conveyed to the government in a collaborative manner. MENGO complements the efforts of the government to address issues which can help improve and implement activities pertaining to the environment agenda in the country.
Speaking at the MENGO Green Hunt 2011 media launch, MENGO Chairman Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma said:
MENGO wants to raise public awareness of the benefits gained from regular use of public transport, such as the LRT, Monorail, commuter trains and buses. This event will complement the Government’s efforts to promote more users of public transport and help to reduce emissions from private motorised vehicles that increase the negative effects of global warming.
He added:
We hope that the MENGO Green Hunt will stimulate participants’ interest to conserve our valuable natural resources and that they will have fun learning about sustainable lifestyle choices, which they can utilise in future.
MENGO thanks the Green Hunt sponsors: Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd, The Weld Shopping Centre, Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd, Permanis Sandilands Sdn Bhd, The Chow Food Sdn Bhd and IKANO Retail Asia.
