Kraft Foods kicked off its annual community programme at the Singapore Children’s Society’s Sunbeam Place recently. Around 80 employees volunteered to spend the afternoon with the children of Sunbeam Place, a residential shelter for abused and neglected children. The afternoon of food, fun and laughter marked the second year of Kraft Foods’ support for Sunbeam Place.
This week of service, Delicious Difference Week, is the largest global employee volunteer event in Kraft Foods history and the first time Kraft Foods and Cadbury colleagues are volunteering side-by-side, sharing their passion for giving back to the community.
A Kraft representative told the CSR Digest that Kraft selected Sunbeam Place as it is the only residential home for children run by the Singapore Children’s Society, and is a shelter for children who have been neglected or abused. The home provides a safe haven that provides children with education, care, counseling and character building experiences in a caring and loving environment. The children at Sunbeam Place have their basic needs provided for but lack constant adult interaction. That’s where Kraft Foods employees can help.
Kraft’s programme has two aims: first, to teach concepts of nutritional education and healthy living through a series of fun-filled, hands-on activities (including sports and games, baking, field trips, art, and picnic activities); and second, to give the children of Sunbeam Place more opportunities to interact with adults and have fun, and to provide a measure of consistency in our interactions.
Kraft is looking at the project in the long-term. Kraft staff intends to go back to the shelter. In fact, the organisation began this partnership in 2009. Over the past year, there have been numerous sessions with the Sunbeam Place children held by Kraft Foods volunteers, including hands-on activities to teach residents about eating healthily, playing hard and leading a balanced and active lifestyle. Feedback from the sessions has been excellent and staff at Sunbeam Place have reported that the children enjoy their activities with Kraft Foods employees immensely.
Delicious Difference Week, which was held on 4-9 October 2010, was the largest global employee volunteer event in Kraft Foods history. In the Asia Pacific region, 4,108 Kraft Foods volunteers in 11 countries donated 20,299 hours of their time.
