In conjunction with the launch of its GreenFingers eco-project, Standard Chartered Bank (Malaysia) Bhd has found a new way of engagement through its Facebook (FB) application, “Treeville”, which will give FB users the opportunity to to plant virtual trees online.
The FB app will hopefully spread awareness on the importance of becoming an environmentally conscious and conscientious nation. GreenFingers’ Treeville accompanies the bank’s (physical) tree-planting exercise that will see a total of 11,000 trees planted across Malaysia.
The campaign was launched in May with an initial number of 5,000 trees pledged to be planted on behalf of Standard Chartered KL Marathon 2010 runners, at strategic locations along the KL Marathon route, and across other states including Sabah and Sarawak.
In less than a month, the GreenFingers campaign grew with an additional 6,000 trees, bringing the total number to 11,000 trees to be planted by Standard Chartered Bank for Malaysia. GreenFingers is also part of the Billion Tree Campaign initiative facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Aside from this, the bank also conducts tree planting in Brunei, India, Korea, the Philippines, Mexico and Zambia, among others.
In addition, Standard Chartered, implements green practices at the workplace, including the reduction of air travel by 50%, paper consumption by 20% and electricity usage by 10%. Recyclable paper is used for office stationery and recycling bins are placed in pantries. Waste is reduced by providing only one waste paper basket per worktable cluster, while members of the staff are encouraged to use recyclable tote bags.
