Workers In Limbo

Kenmark Industries has been reported to have caused more than 400 of its to be stranded when the company’s owner went missing recently. The publicly quoted company in Port Klang also has recently saw its executives resign and its factory sealed.

According to the Malaysian Trades Union (MTUC) vice-president, A Balasubramaniam, who was at the scene to assist the workers, the workers were shocked to find the factory gates locked when they reported for duty on 31 May 2010. However, their salaries for May have been paid.

Balasubramaniam was reported to have said that the MTUC would assist the workers file for retrenchment benefits. Of the workers affected, two hundred are locals and 206 foreigners, mainly Bangladeshis and Burmese.

According to the news report, Kenmark’s former human resources manager, Yeow Kim Fah, said to reporters:

I’m not sure about the future of the workers as it depends on the management.

He declined further elaboration. Yeow, who had been with the company for 16 years, also said:

Even my future is uncertain.
