Celebrating  21 years of being a full-service travel agency, World Discovery Travel is increasing its social responsibility efforts by giving back to the community through a special charity drive from the 1 July – 31 August, 2010. For every airline ticket purchased during this period, RM30 will be donated to two non-profit organisations: Rumah Titian Kasih, A Centre for Single Mothers and Orphans & St Paul’s Day Training Centre for Mentally Challenged People.

World Discovery together with Travelport, the business services provider to the global travel industry, will be launching the charity drive on the 22 of June, 2010 at Dewan St Paul’s from 12:30 -14:30pm where the Day Training Centre holds its training sessions.  Members of the public and airline partners will be able to observe and gain insight to how the Centre functions.

Both charities have been improving the quality of life for the marginalised and World Discovery hopes to raise at least RM10,000 for each charity to enable them to continue their good work.

World Discovery Travel believes that it is important to give back to the community without discrimination which is in line with the 1 Malaysia concept and is no stranger to supporting charitable causes.  Through the years, World Discovery Travel has had Christmas charity drives in-house and hosted an awareness-creating lunch at Tabgha Café which is run by people with learning difficulties.

Not only is this an awareness programme but also a challenge for the company to give back in all senses of the word to the community in a bigger way. This effort is also done in the hope that travellers will also be socially conscious when travelling.

Day Training Centre, Petaling Jaya

DTC is a centre for people who are slow learners, ranging from mild learning disabilities to intellectually impaired.  Students are assessed prior to enrolment and fitted into a class with similar disability level students.  Each intake of students are enrolled for two-years, during which they learn living skills which enable them to enjoy more independent lives.  The centre also provides employment support and runs a monthly Social Club for graduates.  Craft workshops and a regular café is run also run by the centre as part of their training for graduates.  Any proceeds from the sales of the products of the workshop are used to support the financial needs of the centre.

The centre also has a sister facility for children in Puchong – the Bethel Early Intervention Programme.

Rumah Titian Kaseh

Rumah Titian Kaseh is a home with a slight variation from other orphanages.  Single mothers who live here will work at this home in return for their food and shelter.  Orphans who find refuge here come from a range of broken homes to victims of incest and other sexual abuse.   The home also does not turn away the mentally ill – accepting several residents who suffer from schizophrenia.  Currently the home’s biggest challenge is to raise funds to purchase a suitable property for their residents as their current facilities are being put up for sale.
