A BHP spokesperson, who preferred anonymity, told Malaysiakini that the death of Florina Joseph’s fiery death recently was “a clear case of misunderstanding”.
The spokesperson was reported to have said that BHP employees refused to give Teo Chai Yong a fire extinguisher and that could have prevented the death of the Sarawakian college student as the BHP staff could not see the accident, then a misunderstanding occurred with Teo claiming the staff refused to hand him a fire extinguisher.
Teo was the first to arrive on the scene of the accident, which took place in the Cheras neighbourhood of the Malaysia’s capital, had driven to a BHP station and pleaded for a fire extinguisher to put out the fire that he had seen starting under Joseph’s vehicle.
The BHP spokesperson was reported to have conjectured that the BHP staffs’ refusal “could have been due to Teo’s agitated behaviour”. The spokesperson said that the staffs’ cautious action (or inaction) could have also been due to “trauma from frequent exposure to the threat [to the staff] of rape, burglary and murder”.
BHP expressed its condolences to the victim’s family on the loss of their loved one.
