StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards 2009

Seven public-listed companies received awards in the StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards 2009, held at the Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, recently. Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd was recognised for two achievements; namely, in the environment and community categories for companies with market capitalisation of below RM1.0 billion.

The event’s second run saw Tex Cycle Technology (M) Bhd coming out at the top in the marketplace category,while Aluminium Company of Malaysia Bhd won the workplace category winner, both for companies with market capitalisation of below RM1.0 billion

Telekom Malaysia Bhd was recognised in the community category award for companies with market capitalisation of above RM1.0 billion, while the marketplace category winner was Nestle (M) Bhd.

DiGi.Com Bhd won the award in the environment category for companies with market capitalisation of above RM1.0 billion while the workplace category winner was Guinness Anchor Bhd.

The StarBiz-ICR Malaysia Corporate Responsibility Awards was introduced to recognise companies that demonstrate outstanding Corporate Responsibility (CR) practices that go beyond community and philanthropic activities. The aim is to encourage responsible business practices with more focus on how business practices can be responsible in the ways businesses make their money, compared to what they do with the money once they have made it.

According to a news reports, Securities Commission chairman, Tan Sri Zarinah Anwar, who was also the chief judge, said the number of high scorers had increased in both categories: companies with market capitalisation above and below RM1 bil. The awards committee specified that all shortlisted companies should achieve a minimum performance across all four corporate responsibility dimensions — marketplace, workplace, environment and community (Read her full speech here).

It was jointly organised by The Star and the Institute of Corporate Responsibility (ICR) Malaysia, together with its working partners, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Securities Industry Development Corp. Official sponsors were HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd and Canon Marketing (M) Sdn Bhd.
