Among the corporate supports of Earth Hour Malaysia is the Westin Kuala Lumpur. The hotel intends to switch off its lights for one hour on March 27 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, in show of support for the worldwide event, organised by the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF). This is the Westin’s second year participating.
The Malay Mail reports that the hotel has an array of energy-saving measures, such as turning off exterior signage lights, dimming and turning off non-essential interior lights, as well as using candlelight as an alternative in some of their restaurants.
General manager of Westin KL, Kim Powley, was quoted as saying:
We believe that economic growth and the well-being of society are inextricably tied to the health of the environment. We embrace our responsibility for environmental stewardship and commit to raise environmental awareness among our associates, guests and communities.
Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007, when a total of 2.2 million homes and businesses in the Australian city switched off their lights for one hour to make a stand against climate change.
To date, a record-breaking 112 countries and territories have pledged to take part in this year’s Earth Hour.
