Around 40 employees of JLT Thailand waded out into the muddy waters of Bangpoo Industrial Estate in Samut Prakarn province on Thai Environment Day (4 December 2009) to plant 200 mangrove tree saplings. They were guided by members of the Plant-a-Tree Today (PATT) Organisation. The planting of the trees will be a benefit to the environment at Bangpoo Industrial Estate in a number of different ways. Besides beautifying the surroundings, they also absorb carbon from the atmosphere, helping to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Next to rainforests, mangrove trees are considered to be the next biggest carbon sinks of the planet.
The tree planting is the latest in a series of efforts that JLT Thailand has undertaken over the years to contribute to the environment. JLT Thailand has a focus on its carbon footprint and has introduced a number of initiatives as part of its Corporate Sustainability drive.
JLT Thailand’s Managing Director, Andrew Minnitt, said:
It is not often that we get to roll up our sleeves and muddy our hands and feet. Tree planting is a great way for staff to engage one another in a fun and rewarding way. JLT’s employees derive a great sense of satisfaction from such initiatives, especially ones that have a positive impact on the environment. We are a part of the ecosystem, we are responsible for its well-being, and in our small way, we at JLT want to make a difference.
PATT founder Andy Steel said:
It’s great to see companies making the effort to include the environment into their company ethos, despite the world economic downturn.
