Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is something the Malaysian government is serious in promoting so that the needs of the less fortunate are alleviated. Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, was reported to have said that a CSR fund totalling RM100 million will be established soon, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when tabling the 2010 Budget on Friday.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin said this was testament to the government’s commitment:

I have been informed that the fund will be used for charity, to help the less fortunate, the poor, and to organise programmes to assist those in need.

He was reported to have made these statements at the third Annual Al-Khaadem Charity Golf at Tropicana Golf and Country Resort in Kuala Lumpur recently. The deputy prime minister also said:

There are many charitable activities organised from time to time, and I see a lot of people participating (in the activities), which means Malaysians, in general, are very generous people.

Tan Sri Muhyiddin was among 128 people who took part in the charity event, where RM527,000 in donations were collected from various multinational companies and agencies. Part of the proceeds is said to be given to the Universiti Malaya Hospital Children’s Cancer Fund and Rakan Institut Jantung Negara.◊
