Bursa Malaysia Does Its Bit for the Environment
About 200 staff of Bursa Malaysia, together with their families, got together last month to plant over 300 tree saplings at the Kepong Metropolitan Park. The event was to kickstart yet another green initiative under the ambit of the Exchange’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
The tree saplings were purchased using proceeds from Bursa Malaysia’s Adopt-a-Tree programme, which was initiated last year. Apart from donations from the staff, Bursa had also pledged to plant a tree for every team that participated in the Kuala Lumpur Rat Race last year.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had 1.5 acres in the park, aptly named Rimba Bursa Malaysia (Forest of Bursa Malaysia), for the tree-planting project.

sapling. He was joined by Saharudin Mohd Noh, director of the Landscaping and Urban Cleaning Control Department of DBKL; Mohd Taib Haji Zin, deputy director-general of the National Landscape Department; and Khadijah Abdul Rahman, president of the Youth Environmental Heritage Foundation.
“It is important that all of us, whether in our personal or professional capacity, contribute in some way towards worthy causes such as the environment. This project, which is partly aimed at instilling awareness of the environment amongst our colleagues, was conceptualised and organised by Bursa Malaysia staff on their own time and of their own volition, and I am pleased to support their initiative as well as their green spirit,” says Yusli.
The Adopt-a-Tree programme will continue at this year’s Kuala Lumpur Rat Race. Companies that participate in the annual run for charity will not only be doing their bit for the needy but also the environment as well. Bursa Malaysia will once again pledge to plant one tree for every team that signs up to run. This is also in accordance with the exchange’s commitment to ISO 14001, as well as the organisers’ efforts to offset the event’s carbon footprints and mitigate the effects of global warming.

The adopt-a-tree programme is run in aid of conserving Malaysia’s oldest and largest man-made forest. For RM50, trees can be adopted through the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) under its ‘Friends of FRIM’ campaign. FRIM director-general, Datuk Dr Abd Latif Mohmod, was reported to have said that the programme aimed to inculcate a sense of ownership among Malaysians for the country’s natural heritage.◊
